Two ways to get a puppy to Maryland
Ground transport is 3 to 4 days across 2,100 to 2,300 miles, driven the whole way in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops.
A flight nanny is one day. The courier flies with the puppy in the cabin and hands it to you at arrivals. At this distance most Maryland buyers choose the nanny, and I would too.
Either way the puppy is never shipped as cargo. That isn’t negotiable.

Maryland went wrong, then fixed it
Maryland is worth setting out in full because what happened there’s still shaping the rental market. In 2012 the state’s highest court held that pit bulls were inherently dangerous, which imposed strict liability not only on owners but on landlords who knowingly allowed one on the property. Landlords reacted the way you’d expect and a great many families were given the choice of the dog or the lease.
The legislature overturned it. Maryland law today is breed-neutral: liability attaches to the owner of any dog running at large, with no breed test in it. That has been the position for over a decade and no Maryland jurisdiction bans the breed.
Ordinances change and this isn’t legal advice. The state-by-state dog law tables at Michigan State University are the reference collection if you want to read the statute yourself. Whatever your state does, the two things worth confirming in writing before you commit are your own city or county code and your landlord, association or insurer, because private rules aren’t affected by any state law. The clauses that outlived the ruling
The reason that history matters to a buyer now is that a lot of Maryland leases still carry breed clauses written during those two years, and they’re still enforceable as contract terms even though the ruling behind them is gone. If you rent in Maryland, read the pet addendum properly and ask the management company directly, because the clause may well predate the law being fixed.
Maryland’s climate is easy on this breed. Humid in July and August around the Bay, mild otherwise. Most Maryland buyers take a flight nanny into BWI, which is a day rather than the three or four the drive would take.
