How to Find a Reputable American Bully Breeder
Five checks that cost nothing, apply to me as much as anyone, and eliminate almost every bad buy.
A reputable breeder will name their veterinarian, show you the dam live, tell you how many litters they produce, take the dog back at any point, and tell you honestly when a puppy doesn’t suit you. Price, a fancy website and a registry certificate tell you very little.
The five checks
- Ask who does the veterinary work. Mine is Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic in Sedona, and every puppy is examined there before it travels.
- Live video call with the puppy and the dam together. Whenever suits you. The dam lives here and I will show you both on the same call.
- How many litters a year? Occasional, and one at a time. I have never run more than one litter at once because the raising is the part that cannot be rushed.
- What happens if it doesn’t work out? I’ll take back any dog I’ve bred, at any point in its life, with no time limit and no questions asked. A volume seller won’t offer that, because it’s a liability rather than a marketing line.
- Will they tell you no? A breeder who asks about your household and is willing to say a puppy doesn’t suit is one who cares where the dogs land.
What doesn’t tell you much
- Price. High prices signal marketing as often as quality.
- Registration papers. They record parentage, not health or quality. More on that.
- Website quality. Anyone can buy a template.
- Health claims you can’t verify.
Applying this to me
I pass one through five and I’ve published the vet’s number so you can start with the hardest one. Where I’d fail a stricter test: I don’t screen or certify the parents. No hip scoring, no genetic panel. I do a general veterinary examination and I observe the litter daily from birth, and that’s the whole of it.
If certification matters to you, buy from a program that does it. That’s a legitimate choice and I’d rather say so than blur it.
Every puppy, the same terms
$700 whatever the class and whatever the colour. Vet checked by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before travel, a written health record, enough food to change over gradually, and delivery to all fifty states that never involves a cargo hold.
I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. What I do is have every puppy examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves, and the dates go on the record that travels with the dog.
