In Louisiana it comes down to the parish
Louisiana has no statewide preemption, so the authority sits with the parish and the municipality, and it genuinely varies. Some Louisiana parishes and towns restrict pit bull type dogs and others have nothing on the books at all. There’s no shortcut here: the parish code is the answer and the parish government office will tell you.
The state dangerous dog law itself is behavior-based and applies to individual animals. What varies locally is whether an additional breed layer sits on top of it.

Whatever your state does, the two things worth confirming in writing before you commit are your own city or county code and your landlord, association or insurer, because private rules aren’t affected by any state law. Humidity, and a hurricane plan
Louisiana is the most humid state I deliver a puppy into, and humidity rather than temperature is what a short-muzzled dog can’t handle. From May through September a bully in south Louisiana is an indoor dog through the middle of the day, and that isn’t a preference, it’s the animal being physically unable to shed heat into saturated air.
The other thing worth saying plainly to a Louisiana buyer is that a seventy pound dog is much harder to evacuate than a small one. Federal law changed after 2005 to require state and local emergency plans to account for pets, but that’s the plan, not your plan. Crate training from the first week, a carrier the dog will actually fit in as an adult, and a copy of the vaccination record somewhere that isn’t your house. This matters more here than anywhere else I send a dog.
