What makes a chocolate merle American Bully chocolate merle
Merle patterning over a chocolate base: b/b plus a copy of M. The patches are brown rather than black, over a paler ground.
How to tell it’s genuinely chocolate merle
Confused with lilac merle, and again the mislabelling favours the pricier name. Chocolate merle is undiluted, so the patches hold a solid brown depth. Lilac merle has the dilution over the top and reads noticeably paler and dustier.
What chocolate merle costs, and what I charge
Typically $3,500 to $8,000. Of the merle coats it’s the one carrying only the merle risk rather than merle plus dilution, which is worth something real.
Chocolate merle is the lower-risk merle, in the narrow sense that it carries only one of the two risk factors rather than both: there’s no dilution involved, so no coat condition association. The merle question is entirely unchanged though, and it’s the serious one. If I’ve a chocolate merle available, ask me about both of its parents. I’ll tell you straight.

Was the sire merle, and was the dam merle? One merle parent is fine. Two is what produces double merles, and you can’t tell from looking at the puppy. If a seller won’t answer plainly, that’s your answer.
