What makes a merle American Bully merle
The M locus. A single copy produces the mottled, patchy coat and often light or blue eyes. It’s a dominant, which means a merle dog always has at least one merle parent: two non-merles can’t produce one.
How to tell it’s genuinely merle
Confused with brindle by people new to the breed, though they look nothing alike side by side: brindle is directional striping, merle is irregular patching. The more consequential confusion is between a single merle and a double merle, which isn’t a matter of appearance at all and can’t be settled by looking.
What merle costs, and what I charge
Merle in any form commands the largest premiums in the breed, commonly $3,000 to $8,000. That money is precisely what drives merle-to-merle breeding, which is the practice that produces the deaf and blind dogs.
This is the page where being blunt matters most. A single-merle dog is an ordinary healthy dog and there’s nothing wrong with buying one. A double merle, from two merle parents, is at high risk of being deaf, blind or both, and there’s no way to identify which you’re being offered by looking at the puppy. The premiums are what drive merle-to-merle breeding, so the money and the harm are directly connected. Ask us about both parents of any merle puppy here. It’s one question and it’s the only one on this page that matters.
Every puppy I sell is $700, merle or otherwise, XL or pocket, male or female. Why the number is $700.

Health, specifically for this coat
The most serious in the breed. Two copies, from breeding merle to merle, carries a high risk of deafness, blindness or both, and the association is well established across many breeds.
Was the sire merle, and was the dam merle? One merle parent is fine. Two is what produces double merles, and you can’t tell from looking at the puppy. If a seller won’t answer plainly, that’s your answer.

I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. Every puppy is examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves. (928) 284-2840. Call them.
