What makes a white and piebald American Bully white and piebald

Extensive white spotting from the S locus, with sp producing piebald patterning. A true all-white dog is usually an extreme expression of spotting rather than an absence of pigment.

How to tell it’s genuinely white and piebald

Confused with albino, which is a different thing entirely and genuinely rare. A white American Bully almost always has normal pigment on the nose and eye rims and normal eye color; an albino wouldn’t. It’s worth distinguishing because the health implications differ.

What white and piebald costs, and what I charge

Usually $1,200 to $2,500. The one coat where the price should arguably reflect a test rather than a look: ask whether hearing has been checked.

This is the one coat where a specific test is worth asking about. Where white covers the ears and the head extensively, the risk of congenital deafness rises, and it can affect one ear or both. A dog deaf in one ear lives an entirely normal life and most owners never notice. It’s still better to know, and a BAER hearing test is the way to find out. If you’re buying a heavily white puppy from anyone, ask whether hearing has been checked and how.

Every puppy I sell is $700, white and piebald or otherwise, XL or pocket, male or female. Why the number is $700.

Health, specifically for this coat

Congenital deafness. Across dog breeds generally, extensive white on and around the head and ears is associated with a higher rate of deafness, because the same cells that make pigment are involved in inner ear development.

Everything else is about the breed rather than the coat. The full picture, and how every coat compares.

I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. What I do is have every puppy examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves, with the dates written down.
