Getting a puppy to New York
At 2,300 to 2,500 miles, driving to New York takes 3 to 4 days, which is a long time for a young dog. Most buyers this far out choose a flight nanny instead: a courier who flies with the puppy in the cabin, holds it the whole way, and hands it to you at arrivals.

New York State preempts, but the building may not
New York State preempts breed-specific local law under the Agriculture and Markets Law, so no New York city, town or village can ban an American Bully. That covers the whole state including New York City itself, and it has been settled law for many years.
Every real restriction a New York buyer meets is private. The Housing Authority sets weight limits on its own stock. Co-op boards approve or refuse pets at their discretion and aren’t obliged to explain themselves. Rental buildings write their own policies and many cap weight at a level a bully clears by twenty pounds.
Ordinances change and this isn’t legal advice. The state-by-state dog law tables at Michigan State University are the reference collection if you want to read the statute yourself. Whatever your state does, the two things worth confirming in writing before you commit are your own city or county code and your landlord, association or insurer, because private rules aren’t affected by any state law. Get it in writing before the deposit
The single most useful thing a New York buyer can do is obtain written confirmation from the board or the managing agent before committing to a puppy, naming the breed and the expected adult weight. It takes one email. It has saved more New York purchases from collapsing than any other piece of advice on this site, and I’ll hold a puppy while you get it.
For the dog itself, a bully does well in a New York apartment. They’re low-stamina, high-affection dogs that sleep most of the day and want company rather than space. What they won’t tolerate is being under-walked, because they gain weight readily and a heavy frame carrying extra weight is a joint problem within a few years. Two real walks a day and they thrive on the eighth floor.
