What makes a blue merle American Bully blue merle
Two things at once: the D locus dilution that turns black pigment to slate, and the M locus merle allele that breaks the coat into patches. A blue merle is a merle dog whose dark patches are diluted rather than true black.
How to tell it’s genuinely blue merle
Most often confused with a blue piebald, which is white patching on a solid blue rather than true merle mottling. The tell is the edges: merle patches have soft, torn-looking borders and vary in shade across the coat, where piebald white has a clean line against solid color. Eye color isn’t a reliable test, since both can produce light eyes.
What blue merle costs, and what I charge
Advertised anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 and occasionally far above that. It’s the single most inflated coat in the breed and the gap between the asking price and the cost of producing the dog is wider here than anywhere else.
Blue merle is the most searched color in the American Bully and the most aggressively priced, and both of those facts are about fashion rather than about the dog. The question that matters here is a single one: was the sire merle and was the dam merle? One merle parent is fine and produces an ordinary healthy dog. Two is the combination that produces double merles, and you can’t tell which you’re looking at from the puppy. Ask us about both parents of any merle puppy here and we’ll tell you.
Every puppy I sell is $700, blue merle or otherwise, XL or pocket, male or female. Why the number is $700.

Health, specifically for this coat
The one coat carrying both risks at once. Merle to merle breeding produces double merles at high risk of deafness and blindness, and the dilution carries a separate association with color dilution alopecia.
Was the sire merle, and was the dam merle? One merle parent is fine. Two is what produces double merles, and you can’t tell from looking at the puppy. If a seller won’t answer plainly, that’s your answer.

I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. Every puppy is examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves. (928) 284-2840. Call them.
