Tennessee varies by municipality
Tennessee has no statewide breed ban and no statewide preemption, so the question resolves at city level. Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga are the four places most Tennessee buyers live and none of the four bans the breed.
Some smaller Tennessee municipalities do restrict pit bull type dogs, and a few take an approach that catches people out: rather than banning outright they require a higher liability insurance minimum, or containment and signage requirements, for dogs of that type. That isn’t a ban but it’s a real cost, so it’s worth reading the ordinance rather than just checking whether one exists.
Ordinances change and this isn’t legal advice. The state-by-state dog law tables at Michigan State University are the reference collection if you want to read the statute yourself. Whatever your state does, the two things worth confirming in writing before you commit are your own city or county code and your landlord, association or insurer, because private rules aren’t affected by any state law. The easiest climate I deliver into
Tennessee has four genuine seasons and neither extreme is severe by the standards of the rest of this list. High summer in Memphis gets humid enough to need the usual precautions, but the state as a whole is comfortable ground for a heavy short-muzzled dog for most of the year.
Nashville has pulled in a very large number of out-of-state residents over the last decade, and a good share of my Tennessee inquiries come from people who moved there recently and are buying their first dog in a new place. If that’s you, the thing worth checking is your lease or HOA rather than the city code, because Middle Tennessee’s newer developments frequently carry breed and weight clauses.
